In 1912, Rep. Seaborn Roddenberry <\/a>(D-Georgia) proposed an amendment to the US Constitution, banning interracial marriages<\/a>. Similar bills were introduced in 1913 in half of the twenty states where such laws didn’t already exist.<\/p>\n

In introducing the bill to Congress, Roddenberry declared:<\/p>\n

Intermarriage between whites and blacks is repulsive and averse to every sentiment of pure American spirit. It is abhorrent and repugnant. It is subversive to social peace. It is destructive of moral supremeacy, and ultimately this slavery to black beasts will bring this nation to a fatal conflict.<\/p>\n

Compare to some of Dennis Prager’s comments<\/a>. I find the similarity in apocalyptic tone and appeal to the “true American spirit” more than a bit disturbing.<\/p>\n
