{"id":5769,"date":"2004-07-20T15:06:14","date_gmt":"2004-07-20T22:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2004\/07\/20\/death-of-a-genre.html"},"modified":"2014-11-06T08:36:43","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T15:36:43","slug":"death_of_a_genr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2004\/07\/20\/death_of_a_genr.html","title":{"rendered":"Death of a genre?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something I&#8217;ve noticed in the last few months at the local Barnes &#038; Noble (and Borders):  <em>Where have all the <\/em>Star Trek <em>books gone?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I mean, for the past decade, an entire columnar bookshelf or more of <em>Star Trek <\/em>novels &#8212; from every era of every show (and in-between and beyond) have been a staple at major bookstores.<\/p>\n<p>And now?  Two, three shelves only.  Hell, there are more <em>Star Wars <\/em>books there than <em>Star Trek<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In general, I always found most ST books dreck (Peter David&#8217;s being a noteworthy exception), but it&#8217;s sort of shocking to see the selection implode like that.  A major publisher&#8217;s decision?  Bigger profits from <em>manga?<\/em>  New strategies from Paramount?  A collapsing market?  No idea.
