{"id":5773,"date":"2004-07-20T11:41:56","date_gmt":"2004-07-20T18:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2004\/07\/20\/manchurian.html"},"modified":"2014-11-06T10:54:50","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T17:54:50","slug":"manchurian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2004\/07\/20\/manchurian.html","title":{"rendered":"Manchurian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00005JN63?&#038;tag=davedoesthebl-20\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B00005JN63.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg\" class=\"left\" border=0 \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve been following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000243\/\" target=\"_blank\">Denzel Washington <\/a>since his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0083483\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>St. Elsewhere <\/em><\/a>days, and I honestly can&#8217;t think off the top of my head of a bad film he&#8217;s been in.<\/p>\n<p>That said, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0368008\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Manchurian Candidate <\/a><\/em>worries me.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I think it will be a bad film, mind you &#8212; it&#8217;s got a great cast, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchuriancandidate.com\/whoisthemanchuriancandidate.html\" target=\"_blank\">the trailer<\/a> looks like a great action\/suspense\/conspiracy flick.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00020X88Y?&#038;tag=davedoesthebl-20\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.amazon.com\/images\/P\/B00020X88Y.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg\" class=\"right\" border=0 \/><\/a>It&#8217;s just that I have a great deal of admiration for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0056218\/\" target=\"_blank\">the original 1962 flick<\/a>, and it looks like the new one is less of a remake than a reimagining of the whole premise, with Marco as a lone conspiracy nut (rather than someone eventually working within the system), Shaw as the VP candidate (rather than his stepson), Manchurian referring to a conglomerate (rather than, well, a part of China).  <\/p>\n<p>And, frankly, any <em>Manchurian Candidate <\/em>that&#8217;s missing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eleves.ens.fr:8080\/home\/madore\/images\/cards\/english\/queen-diamonds.png\" target=\"_blank\">Queen of Diamonds <\/a>is sort of like a <em>Star Wars <\/em>remake without the Wookiee.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure it will be a good movie, and there may be some plot twists that aren&#8217;t yet clear (I can think of a couple offhand).  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000658\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meryl Streep <\/a>will be hard-pressed to match <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001450\/\" target=\"_blank\">Angela Lansbury<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/Sections\/Awards\/Academy_Awards_USA\/1963\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar-nominated performance<\/a>, but I have faith in her.  And, like I said, Denzel Washington basically rocks.  I just sort of wish they&#8217;d decided to make a &#8220;new&#8221; movie that some folks accused of &#8220;ripping off&#8221; the original, than make something that purports to be a remake of the original while taking such liberties with it.<\/p>\n<p>Though, of course, then you&#8217;d have to wonder why they&#8217;d remake it at all. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been following Denzel Washington since his St. Elsewhere days, and I honestly can&#8217;t think off the top of my head of a bad film he&#8217;s been in.
