News - Fox 2000 dives into 'Voyage'\" href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story2&#038;u=\/variety\/20040624\/va_fi_ne\/fox_2000_dives_into__voyage\">movie remake of <i>Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea<\/i><\/a> is in the works.<\/p>\n<p>I always had mixed feelings about that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000740\/\">Irwin Allen <\/a>schlockfest.  On the one hand, it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portup.com\/~hjbe\/voyage\/drink.html\">too frelling cheesy for words<\/a>, quickly devolving from its initial black-and-white adventure series tone to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portup.com\/~hjbe\/voyage\/thinking.html\">SF goofiness <\/a>that would make even its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iann.net\/voyage\/\">cousin<\/a>&#8216;s <i>Lost in Space <\/i>Dr Smith blush.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, in the great SF wasteland that was the late 60s, it was &#8230; well, <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/title\/tt0057798\/\">just about the only thing going<\/a>, once <i>Star Trek <\/i>was gone.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, I still have a fondness for the wall of <i>blinkenlights <\/i>that made up the <i>Seaview<\/i>&#8216;s computer.  And certainly there&#8217;s no reason why the basic setting (an advanced undersea research vessel and What It Discovers Out There) couldn&#8217;t make a decent movie, at least.<\/p>\n<p>Still &#8212; it won&#8217;t be the same without <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000865\/\">Richard Basehart <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/name\/nm0373314\/\">David Hedison <\/a>chewing the scenery and trading off the &#8220;Who&#8217;s going to be thought insane because of their insane (but correct) interpretation of the insanity going on?&#8221; roles on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A movie remake of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is in the works.
