{"id":6030,"date":"2004-06-03T18:18:34","date_gmt":"2004-06-04T01:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2004\/06\/03\/ars-gratia-artis-4.html"},"modified":"2004-06-03T18:18:34","modified_gmt":"2004-06-04T01:18:34","slug":"ars_gratia_arti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2004\/06\/03\/ars_gratia_arti.html","title":{"rendered":"Ars gratia artis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this age, it is difficult to avoid giving offense in some fashion or another (people being so eager to search it out), so coming up with <a title=\"Reason\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reason.com\/0405\/artifact.shtml\">&#8220;art that does not offend anyone&#8221;<\/a> is probably an impossible task, short of abstract designs (perhaps classical Islamic art had something there).<\/p>\n<p>But is it okay to censor stuff just because it&#8217;s frickin&#8217; <i>ugly?<\/i>  Or for someone to make an <i>aesthetic <\/i>judgment not to publically fund an art project, or, at the very least, to decide that a rather unsightly &#8220;reaction &#8230; to 9\/11&#8221; is probably <i>not <\/i>an proper subject for public art at an <i>international airport?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Frankly, I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s censorship.
