{"id":7163,"date":"2004-10-18T08:05:29","date_gmt":"2004-10-18T15:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2004\/10\/18\/marital-rights.html"},"modified":"2004-10-18T08:05:29","modified_gmt":"2004-10-18T15:05:29","slug":"marital_rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2004\/10\/18\/marital_rights.html","title":{"rendered":"Marital rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those who think gay couples want &#8220;special rights&#8221; &#8212; or that they can simply form contracts to simulate marital rights without getting legal marriage recognition &#8212; or who think it should be just up to the states to decide it because, after all, marriage is a state thing &#8212; here&#8217;s a sobering review of exactly <a href=\"http:\/\/scribbling.net\/1049-federal-rights-depend-on-marital-status\" target=\"_blank\">what being married ensures on a <em>federal<\/em> level<\/a>.  And what, therefore, is <em>not <\/em>available to committed, monogamous gay couples who are married in all but legal name.<\/p>\n<p>The GAO in 1997, with the passage of DOMA, identified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/archive\/1997\/og97016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">1,049 federal laws and regulations<\/a> related to marital status.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not talking special rights here, folks.
