{"id":7256,"date":"2005-04-14T11:46:03","date_gmt":"2005-04-14T18:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2005\/04\/14\/i-suppose-of-both-sides-are-pleased-and-offended-its-a-good-law.html"},"modified":"2014-11-06T07:44:31","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T14:44:31","slug":"i_suppose_of_bo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2005\/04\/14\/i_suppose_of_bo.html","title":{"rendered":"I suppose of both sides are pleased and offended, it&#8217;s a good law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Connecticut seems well on its way to being the first state to have <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/C\/CIVIL_UNIONS_CONNECTICUT?SITE=1010WINS&#038;SECTION=US&#038;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" target=\"_blank\">a non-court-ordered civil unions law for same-sex couples.<\/a>  The state Senate earlier approved a measure that, somewhat amended, has now passed the state House.  The governor is expected to sign the amended bill if the Senate then passes it.<\/p>\n<p>Gay rights folks are happy because it provides a legal mechanism for recognition and protection of their relationships and rights.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents are unhappy, because (they say) it &#8220;harms marriage&#8221; &#8212; noting (with some justice) that it&#8217;s just marriage-by-another-name.  <\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, opponent are happy because the House inserted an amendment to explicitly identify &#8220;marriage&#8221; (marriage-by-its-own-name, so to speak) as being between one man and one woman.  Thus somehow belying the argument that the civil union law is the same as marriage, since it now, quite clearly, would not be.<\/p>\n<p>Which, in turn, has made gay rights folks unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect, if both sides are willing to hold onto the parts that make them <em>happy, <\/em>and not go ballistic over the parts that make them <em>unhappy, <\/em>that this is something that most on both sides can live with.
