{"id":7274,"date":"2005-04-11T06:31:10","date_gmt":"2005-04-11T13:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2005\/04\/11\/spam-ponderings.html"},"modified":"2005-04-11T06:31:10","modified_gmt":"2005-04-11T13:31:10","slug":"spam_ponderings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2005\/04\/11\/spam_ponderings.html","title":{"rendered":"Spam ponderings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Comment and trackback spam continue to be a problem here, accumulating at a manageable but annoying pace.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/images\/spam_050411.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Spam tracked\"><\/p>\n<p>Now comes a new approach (hat tip <a href=\"http:\/\/stupidevilbastard.com\/index\/seb\/comments\/brad_choate_releases_spamlookup_for_movabletype\/\" target=\"_blank\">Les<\/a>) from Brad Choate, <a href=\"http:\/\/bradchoate.com\/weblog\/2005\/04\/07\/spamlookup\" target=\"_blank\">SpamLookup<\/a>.  And it&#8217;s being highly touted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jayallen.org\/comment_spam\/2005\/04\/introducing_spamlookup\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Allen<\/a> of MT-Blacklist fame.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously looking at this one, though I want to get a feel for what sort of burden it puts on the host system (vs a mostly-just-MT-BL approach; I am running MT-DSBL, the precursor to this, as well) before I move forward.<\/p>\n<p>The one thing Choate recommends that I&#8217;ve not gone forward with is turning on user registration for comments.  I&#8217;d really rather not, if I can avoid it, and I&#8217;ve been able to thus far (though I&#8217;m tempted to for Margie&#8217;s blog, since her comment count vs. spam count is relatively low).
