{"id":7347,"date":"2005-03-24T12:31:43","date_gmt":"2005-03-24T19:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2005\/03\/24\/a-new-criterion-for-diversity.html"},"modified":"2005-03-24T12:31:43","modified_gmt":"2005-03-24T19:31:43","slug":"a_new_criterion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2005\/03\/24\/a_new_criterion.html","title":{"rendered":"A new criterion for &#8220;diversity&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Princeton Review of best colleges, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princetonreview.com\/college\/research\/rankings\/rankingCategory.asp?categoryID=3\" target=\"_blank\">one of the criteria for a &#8220;diverse&#8221; university is ignoring God<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/images\/diversity.png\" width=500 height=149 \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Huh?<\/p>\n<p>Delving into the individual pages, one finds the question restated as &#8220;Are students very religious?&#8221;  Which makes sense, maybe, if you equate being &#8220;religious&#8221; with &#8220;the school is full of a single, vocal, socially-enforced common religious\/denominational point of view.&#8221;  Maybe.  <\/p>\n<p>Certainly one can consider the distinction between the top five two categories given:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Students Ignore God on a Regular Basis&#8221; &#8211; Reed College, Lewis &#038; Clark College, Marlboro College, Eugene Lang College, Hampshire College\n<li>&#8220;Students Pray on a Regular Basis&#8221; &#8211; Brigham Young University, Wheaton College, Grove City College, University of Dallas, Samford University<\/ul>\n<p>But does a homogeneous <em>non<\/em>-religious student body represent a more &#8220;diverse&#8221; school than a (presumably) uniformly religious one?  I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d agree there.  (Would a student seeking an active spiritual life, for example, find the &#8220;Regularly Ignoring God&#8221; students of Lewis &#038; Clark more diverse or tolerant, for example?)<\/p>\n<p>And &#8230; um &#8230; &#8220;monochromatic&#8221; as the antonym for &#8220;diverse&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Identifying colleges as being more religiously-oriented vs. less religiously-oriented is, probably, of value.  But I&#8217;d tend to consider a college that had <em>both <\/em>strong religious organizations and activities <em>and <\/em>non-religious\/secular ones (even anti-religious ones) as the more <em>diverse <\/em>campus.  Just as, for example, a campus that had a large and active gay community would be more diverse than a gay-<em>only<\/em> or straight-<em>only<\/em> college.<\/p>\n<p>Weird.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Princeton Review of best colleges, one of the criteria for a &#8220;diverse&#8221; university is ignoring God.
