It’s one thing to not get a joke (God knows I don’t get enough of them). It’s another thing to assume that, if you don’t get the joke, the joker must be Evil and the joke must be Even More Eviller.<\/p>\n

I’m not sure I’d ever go out of my way to get Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy<\/a> — gummi candy in the shape of critters run over by cars, complete with tread marks — especially since I don’t particularly care for gummi candy. But in the long tradition of Gross Products That Appeal To Kids, it seems pretty harmless.<\/p>\n

To me, at least. Not to animal rights activists.<\/p>\n

The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy — in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels — fosters cruelty toward animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.<\/p>\n

“It sends the wrong message to children, that it’s OK to harm animals. And that’s the wrong message, especially from a so-called wholesome corporation like Kraft,” said society spokesman Matthew Stanton.<\/p>\n

Right. That was immediately what I thought: “If Katherine sees this, she’ll think it’s okay to run over animals with the car. Just like she thinks it’s okay to drop anvils on the heads of roadrunners and\/or coyotes. Gads!”<\/p>\n

*sigh*<\/em><\/p>\n

And Kraft, bless their little hearts, has decided that controversy is bad food business, and so has pulled the plug on the product<\/a>. It’s hard to blame them, but it’s irksome nonetheless, since I suspect the “consumers” they are kowtowing to are no more representative of the population at large than the “viewers” that protest various TV shows.<\/p>\n

Score one for the humor-impaired (and for those who say the putative Left can be as self-righteously censorious as the Right).<\/p>\n
