Daniel Schorr’s commentary<\/a> on All Things Considered <\/i>tonight. It was, indeed, a classic case of “No Good News Goes Unpunished.” Pleased with the collapse of the Taliban? Happy for the cheering, singing, clean-shaven crowds in Kabul?<\/p>\nObviously, things in Afghanistan are spiraling out of control. The Northern Alliance, after having promised to not go into Kabul, went in anyway. There were killings, and rumors of killings (obviously Schorr, who invokes with fondness recollections of the liberary of Paris by the French Resistance, doesn’t remember the killings that ensued there). And now we’re faced with the insurmountable problems of rebuilding the entire country from scratch, “before the next War in Afghanistan.”<\/p>\n
Yeesh. And, feh.<\/p>\n
Is everything rosy and wonderful? Of course not. Are there challenges? Of course there are. Could things go horribly, horribly wrong? It’s possible.<\/p>\n
But today, right now, are things better in Afghanistan than they were a week ago? A month ago? A year ago?<\/p>\n
Yeah. I think they really are.<\/p>\n
