What are your personal views on that, and do you think both should be taught in public schools?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT: I think &#8212; as I said, harking back to my days as my governor &#8212; both you and Herman are doing a fine job of dragging me back to the past. (Laughter.) Then, I said that, first of all, that decision should be made to local school districts, but I felt like both sides ought to be properly taught.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both sides should be properly taught?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT: Yes, people &#8212; so people can understand what the debate is about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So the answer accepts the validity of intelligent design as an alternative to evolution?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT: I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought, and I&#8217;m not suggesting &#8212; you&#8217;re asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, and the answer is yes.<\/p>\n<p>Bush sort of waffles around on it, but &#8230; damn, Mr. President, the <em>ideas <\/em>I expect to be taught in <em>science <\/em>class are, well, <em>science, <\/em>not mystical mumbo-jumbo about <em>how life is too complex for us to understand it, thus there must be someone smarter behind it all<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desy.de\/gna\/interpedia\/greek_myth\/creationMan.html\" target=\"_blank\">(Prometheus<\/a>, natch) <em>and, by the way, all that evil-ution claptrap is unAmerican and immoral.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not science, Mr. President.  That&#8217;s sitting around in caves, scared by the thunder, and deciding it must be the giants playing nine pins or something.<\/p>\n<p>For shame.
