I was surprised that we hadn’t heard more from the insurance company about the deck damage when I got back. Lo and behold, reason is that they were busy processing stuff, and we just got a check in the mail for $4900.<\/p>\n
But that’s not all. Given that we have replacement value on our insurance, once we demonstrate that we’ve actually replaced the deck, they’ll send us another $4600.<\/p>\n
That’s the good news. The bad news is — yeesh! $10.5k for a very simple deck? I wonder how much our expanded plans for it will actually end up running.<\/p>\n
We actually did meet with the contractor from the insurance company before we left on our Memorial Day trip. He was competent and thorough, and had a crew come out to put a sized prop to keep the deck from collapsing (eek). We also raised some of the deck redesign we were thinking about (the “5 years from now” project that’s happening now, I think), making it deeper, split level, add a stairway, and using an artificial material rather than wood.
