{"id":8153,"date":"2005-05-06T09:39:59","date_gmt":"2005-05-06T16:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2005\/05\/06\/doing-no-favors.html"},"modified":"2005-05-06T09:39:59","modified_gmt":"2005-05-06T16:39:59","slug":"doing_no_favors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2005\/05\/06\/doing_no_favors.html","title":{"rendered":"Doing no favors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><small>And now for something <em>not <\/em>about <em>Serenity<\/em> &#8230;<\/small><\/p>\n<p>A new study indicates that picthing slowly to youngsters isn&#8217;t helping them &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2005\/05\/050505085134.htm\" target=\"_blank\">it actually makes it harder<\/a> for them to catch or bat the ball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\"> &#8220;When you throw something slowly to a child, you think you&#8217;re doing them a favour by trying to be helpful,&#8221; said Terri Lewis, professor of psychology at McMaster University. &#8220;Slow balls actually appear stationary to a child.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This explains why a young child holding a bat or a catcher&#8217;s mitt will often not react to a ball thrown toward her, prompting flummoxed parents to continue throwing the ball even slower.
