{"id":8302,"date":"2005-12-20T11:20:11","date_gmt":"2005-12-20T18:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2005\/12\/20\/message-to-the-future.html"},"modified":"2005-12-20T11:20:11","modified_gmt":"2005-12-20T18:20:11","slug":"message_to_the","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2005\/12\/20\/message_to_the.html","title":{"rendered":"Message to the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the high-tech equivalent a time capsule &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/culture\/0,1284,69880,00.html?tw=wn_story_top5\" target=\"_blank\">sending your future self an e-mail<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">The site [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.futureme.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">FutureMe.org<\/a>] lets people send messages 30 years from now, though Sly&#8217;s numbers show most users schedule their e-mails to be sent within three years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want people to think about their future and what their goals and dreams and hopes and fears are,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re trying to facilitate some serious existential pondering.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said a large number of the messages sent do one of two basic things: tell the future person what the past person was doing at the time, and ask the future person if he or she had met the aspirations of the past person.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tone of the past person is not always friendly,&#8221; said Sly, now a Yale University graduate student. &#8220;It&#8217;s often like &#8216;Get off your lazy butt.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, there&#8217;s not much I want to say to my future self.  What do I have to teach him?  Do I need to remind him of something?  (Heck, isn&#8217;t that why I have a blog?)  At best, I will sound charmingly naive.
