{"id":9245,"date":"2006-08-02T09:39:58","date_gmt":"2006-08-02T16:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2006\/08\/02\/will-kansas-evolve.html"},"modified":"2006-08-02T09:39:58","modified_gmt":"2006-08-02T16:39:58","slug":"will_kansas_evo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2006\/08\/02\/will_kansas_evo.html","title":{"rendered":"Will Kansas evolve?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of forces is gathering steam to try to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/08\/01\/us\/01evolution.html?pagewanted=1&amp;ei=5088&amp;en=da489440c39ebbb4&amp;ex=1312084800&amp;partner=rssnyt&amp;emc=rss\" target=\"_blank\">reclaim the Kansas State School Board<\/a> from the conservatives who took it over in 2004, and who put Intelligent Design and other theories &#8220;more adequate&#8221; than evolution into the state science curriculum. Both Republicans and Democrats are trying to show that Kansas is not the<br \/>\nhick fundamentalist outpost it&#8217;s being made out to be.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s amusing is watching the conservative candidates &#8212; four of the five seats up for election this year &#8212; try to wriggle over the whole issue, claim that religion isn&#8217;t part of it, and that it&#8217;s just a matter of .<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Connie Morris, a conservative Republican running for re-election, said the board had merely authorized scientifically valid criticism of evolution. Ms. Morris, a retired teacher and author, said she did not believe in evolution. \u201cIt\u2019s a nice bedtime story,\u201d she said. \u201cScience doesn\u2019t back it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Science&#8221; being defined as &#8230; what?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The chairman of the board, Dr. Steve E. Abrams, a veterinarian and the leader of the conservative majority [&#8230;]said his views as someone who believes that God created the universe 6,500 years ago had nothing to do with the science standards adopted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my personal faith, yes, I am a creationist,\u201d he said. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t have anything to do with science. I can separate them.\u201d He said he agreed that \u201cmy personal views of Scripture have no room in the science classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Abrams said that at a community meeting he had been asked whether it was possible to believe in the Bible and in evolution, and that he had responded, \u201cThere are those who try to believe in both \u2014 there are theistic evolutionists \u2014 but at some point in time you have to decide which you\u2019re going to put your credence in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I certainly respect Dr. Abrams personally held opinion.
