William Saletan at <i>Slate<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/?id=2057986\">thinks so<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">The reason such questions \u201cbubble around\u201d is that reporters raise and repeat them in a self-escalating cycle. Here\u2019s how it works. On Friday, a reporter tells an admiral at a Pentagon briefing, \u201cThere is a growing chorus now\u2014it&#8217;s still a small chorus, but it&#8217;s getting louder\u2014of critics who are saying that the United States appears to be bogged down.\u201d On Saturday, under the headline \u201cNew Sense of Impatience Is Emerging,\u201d the Los Angeles Times cites the \u201cbogged down\u201d question as evidence that doubts have \u201ccrystallized\u201d as \u201cthe military faces increasingly skeptical questions.\u201d On Sunday, ABC\u2019s Cokie Roberts opens her interview with Rumsfeld by noting, \u201cThere&#8217;ve been stories over the weekend that give the perception that this war after three weeks is not going very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saletan suggests that lack of news of tremendous success can only be hyped by the media as failure &#8212; a self-fulfilling prophecy when it then turns into stories about American citizenry doubting whether the war can be won after all the &#8220;setbacks&#8221; endured.<\/p>\n<p><small>(Also via <a href=\"http:\/\/instapundit.blogspot.com\/2001_10_28_instapundit_archive.html#6772426\">InstaPundit<\/a>)<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are journalists themselves responsible for the &#8220;doubts&#8221; and &#8220;haunting spectre of quagmire&#8221; that they report on as lurking about the war?
