{"id":9422,"date":"2006-07-10T08:38:28","date_gmt":"2006-07-10T15:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2006\/07\/10\/interesting-times-2.html"},"modified":"2006-07-10T08:38:28","modified_gmt":"2006-07-10T15:38:28","slug":"interesting_tim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2006\/07\/10\/interesting_tim.html","title":{"rendered":"Interesting times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone has heard the old Chinese phrase\/curse, &#8220;May you live in interesting times.&#8221;&nbsp; Interestingly enough, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/May_you_live_in_interesting_times\" target=\"_blank\">it may not actually be an old Chinese phrase\/curse<\/a>.&nbsp; Nor is the ideogram for &#8220;crisis&#8221; actually made up of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinyin.info\/chinese\/crisis.html\" target=\"_blank\">the symbols for &#8220;danger&#8221; and &#8220;opportunity.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, old Chinese phrases (curses or not) are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2145072\/\" target=\"_blank\">the New Hot Meme at management conferences<\/a> and the like.&nbsp; Part of it&#8217;s the growing influence of the Chinese arena for doing business.&nbsp; Part of it seems to be the need to move on to the next trend (and to sell next set of management books).&nbsp; And part of it (my thought) is that the old standard of using English or Biblical passages is not only seen as old hat, but as divisive or parochial.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, how do the Chinese feel about all this?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In Aspen, there was one session that was entirely free of Chinese proverbs: a panel at which Chinese, Japanese, and Western experts talked about China&#8217;s economy and global imbalances.
