{"id":9622,"date":"2006-05-24T23:06:59","date_gmt":"2006-05-25T06:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2006\/05\/24\/but-nobody-told-us-wed-have-our-rights-infringed.html"},"modified":"2006-05-24T23:06:59","modified_gmt":"2006-05-25T06:06:59","slug":"but_nobody_told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2006\/05\/24\/but_nobody_told.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;But nobody told us <i>we&#8217;d<\/i> have our rights infringed!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After either rolling over or abetting the expansion of Federal power to investigate, search, probe, and otherwise ransack the homes, lives, and records of suspected terrorists\/criminals, with little or no oversight, it&#8217;s more than a little amusing that Congress &#8212; GOP as well as Democrat &#8212; is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/05\/24\/washington\/24cong.html?_r=1&#038;hp&#038;ex=1148443200&#038;en=b4f58da213ff8a64&#038;ei=5094&#038;partner=homepage&#038;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">up in arms over a weekend search of a Congressman&#8217;s office<\/a> in connection with a bribery investigation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Resentment boiled among senior Republicans for a second day on Tuesday after a team of warrant-bearing agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation turned up at a closed House office building on Saturday evening, demanded entry to the office of a lawmaker and spent the night going through his files.<\/p>\n<p>The episode prompted cries of constitutional foul from Republicans \u2014 even though the lawmaker in question, Representative William J. Jefferson of Louisiana, is a Democrat whose involvement in a bribery case has made him an obvious partisan political target.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker J. Dennis Hastert raised the issue personally with President Bush on Tuesday.
