Here are some thoughts (exclusive of my political leanings or the policy contents of the mailings).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Governor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beauprezforgovernor.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Beauprez<\/a> (R)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>:  Never mentions that he&#8217;s a Republican.  In fact, if you didn&#8217;t know it, you couldn&#8217;t even necessarily tell from the positions presented.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Decent amount.  A micro-biography, a few policy positions, a catchy motto, a nice quote.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>:  A nice front, but the back is a bit busy, with too many colors and fonts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ritterforgovernor.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Ritter<\/a> (D)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Never mentions that he&#8217;s a Democrat.  In fact, if you didn&#8217;t know it, you couldn&#8217;t even necessarily tell from the positions presented.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Decent.  Election info and poll rides info on the front, some policy bullets on the back.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: A bit sparse and a bit too much white space.  But simply done, and the signature is a nice touch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>House of Representatives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tancredo.org\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Tancredo<\/a> (R) #1<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Never mentioned.  Discernable from policy positions, but not stated.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Lots of policy positions on the back (and for as much as I think Tancredo is a reactionary doofus (&#8220;FOR A SECURE AMERICA&#8221;), I give him <em>some<\/em> props for being a <em>non-conformist<\/em> reactionary jerk.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None (but see below)<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: The text gets a wee bit small, but it&#8217;s not bad.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tancredo.org\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Tancredo<\/a> (R) #2<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Never mentioned.  But his opponent is lambasted association and party affiliation.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  This flier, which is officially from the candidate, is a hatchet job negative mailing about Tancredo&#8217;s opponent, full of highly elided, editorialized (and poorly spelled) quotes from Bill Winter, as well as what can only be described as name-calling.  And it&#8217;s so crudely done, I&#8217;d be embarrassed if I were a Tancredo supporter.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  Insulting caricatures of Democratic leaders, a wretched picture of winter, and some awful pull quotes.  This is negative campaigning at its crudest.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Meh.  The art isn&#8217;t very good, the layout is poor, the text is difficult to follow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tancredo.org\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Tancredo<\/a> (R) #3<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Never mentioned, though implied in the text.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Combo biography and &#8220;here&#8217;s the things I&#8217;ve done&#8221; narrative.  Folksy tone to the text and the photos.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Professionally laid out.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winterforcongress.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Winter<\/a> (D)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Never mentioned.  More quotes and associations with Democrats than Republicans, but not clearly stated anywhere.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Tri-fold brochure full of policy positions, including one page of biography.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  Some oblique criticism of current governmental policy, but no <em>ad hominem<\/em> attacks.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Okay.  About one too many colors and typefaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>State Representative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spencerswalm.com\" target=\"_blank\">Spencer Swalm<\/a> (R) #1<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>:  Never mentioned.  Implied  by some of the folks quoted as supporting him.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Only a handful of bullet points.  Lots of pictures and a couple of catch phrases.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None (but see below).<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Professionally laid out.  One minor formatting glitch that shouldn&#8217;t have gotten out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spencerswalm.com\" target=\"_blank\">Spencer Swalm<\/a> (R) #2<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>:  Never mentioned.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Some bullet points on Swalm and his education policies (on one side).<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  Criticism of his opponent fills up the whole back side, mostly on a single issue (her opposition to the CSAP).\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Okay.  A bit busy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/angelaengel.com\" target=\"_blank\">Angela Engel<\/a> (D) <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>:  Never mentioned.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Trifold brochure.  Lots of verbiage, though a lot of it is fluff.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Someone threw this together in Word.  Not bad, but not professional.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><small>N.B.  Swalm must have spent a zillion dollars on lawn signs: they are everywhere, almost as many as Beauprez and Tancredo have out there combined.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><strong>County Clerk\/Recorder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nancydoty.com\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Doty<\/a> (R)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Not stated.  Not that I think it should be a partisan office, but since it is &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Mostly fluff.  Some credentials, and a cute series of acronyms about what she&#8217;s done in the office.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Okay.  About what you&#8217;d expect for County Clerk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.conwayforclerk.com\" target=\"_blank\">Kathleen Conway<\/a> (D)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Yes!  Someone who&#8217;s willing to admit what party she&#8217;s from!  Major brownie points!<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Vision bullets, background info, endorsements.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Oh, my.  Awful pictures, some unfortunately distorted (wider than they should be).  Small text.  Garish colors.  Flimsy paper stock.  About what you&#8217;d expect for County Clerk &#8230; ten years ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Miscellaneous<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasdonahue.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Donahue<\/a> (D) &#8211; County Commissioner<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Nope.  Nothing in his positions indicates any affiliation.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Trifold brochure, but most of one side is bakground\/bio, most of the other side is pictures.  One panel of positions, none of which probably differ from anything his opponent would be in favor of.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Another Word product, enhanced by clumsy tab settings, inconsistent layout, and some really awful colors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sakdol.com\" target=\"_blank\">Corbin Sakdol<\/a> (R) &#8211; County Assessor<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: None.  Again, not sure why this is a partisan office, but it is, even if Sakdol&#8217;s unwilling to claim his affiliation.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Small postcard, with endorsements on one side, CV on the other.  Of course, what sort of policy info can you provide as assessor?<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: It&#8217;s not purty, but it&#8217;s not ugly, either.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>.<a href=\"http:\/\/mikecoffman.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Coffman<\/a> (R) &#8211; Secretary of State<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: None provided.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Not that there&#8217;s a lot of policy involved, but he makes clear his feelings of about illegal voters.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Nice cover.  Busy reverse (including an odd thumb-print background).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinyurl.com\/gf78t\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Doberson<\/a> (R) &#8211; County Coroner<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Again, why is this a partisan office?  Regardless, no mention of affiliation is given.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Mostly biographical  info, giving his qualifications. A bit busy.  Effective (if manipulative) photos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fairequal.org\" target=\"_blank\">Yes on I<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: N\/A.  Endorsements provided.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Provides an explanation of the referendum, its text, and some comments about it.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Very nicely laid out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Voting Guides<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Republican (yup, no web page)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Well, duh.  Not in the title, but hard to miss.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Candidate (with photos), sample ballot (with Republican names circled, and ballot issues without any recommendations).\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Simple, but clear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/arapahoedems.org\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<u>Affiliation<\/u>: Well, duh.  Not in the title, but hard to miss.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Information<\/u>:  Voting date info, precinct info, county clerk info, candidates (with photos, web sites and phone numbers; position summaries for major offices), positions on two ballot issues (39, I).<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Negativity<\/u>:  None.<\/li>\n<li>\n<u>Aesthetics<\/u>: Well laid out, good use of color, professional in appearance.  On newspaper stock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few comments on website (or their URLs):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\nEveryone except the Arapahoe County Republicans had a website on their mailings.<\/li>\n<li>\nEveryone had a personalized domain, except Doberson (who used a TinyURL to point to a <em>Rocky Mountain News<\/em> candidate page).<\/li>\n<li>\nKudos to Tom Tancredo&#8217;s organization for having a .<em>org<\/em> TLD (rather than a .<em>com<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>\nMinus points (IMO) for the &#8220;fluff&#8221; URLs with the two ballot issue brochures (&#8220;FairEqual.org&#8221; for Yes on I, &#8220;COExcellentSchools.org&#8221; for No on 39).  URLs should be descriptive, not advertising.  But, again, that&#8217;s IMO.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note &#8212; just because you have a &#8220;good&#8221; mailer doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re a good person, or that I agree with you, or vice-versa.  But for the &#8220;great unwashed undecided,&#8221; presenting infomation that&#8217;s clear, fair, and well-presented can only help &#8212; and doing the opposite can only hurt.
