Kirk's son sets my teeth on edge. I don't care much for his mother, either.
+Scott Randel Heavy-handed plot elements are heavy-handed.
I'll confess I made Kay watch this one because next up are "nuclear wessels," which is just timeless. (Also: Scotty talking to a mouse, and Spock dealing with a music-playing punk on a bus.)
And a freaking Klingon Bird of Prey FTW!
+Stan Pedzick Interestingly enough (glancing through some trivia), the movie was originally designed to feature Romulans as the main baddies, but the decision was taken relatively late in the game to change over to the more familiar Klingons. However, the BoP model work had already been don (thus the feather patterns), so the ship was (in story terms) officially stolen by Kruge et al. — though that was never mentioned, and the fact that Romulans were still using basic Klingon designs helped people miss the issue.

I remember reading that at the time. It didn't bother me too much, as the TV series had established that the Klingons and Romulans were sharing technology.
+Scott Randel It would have made for an interesting move to have the Romulans — perforce less scenery-chewing than the Klingons — as the antagonists. Esp. if that then tied into the "Vulcan mysticism".
The movie does have a ton of great lines — a lot of them from McCoy. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088170/quotes?ref_=ttqu_ql_4)
But my favorite is from Captain Esteban, when Saavik tells him straightforwardly from the planet that the Genesis device has apparently regenerated Spock: "Saavik, uh, that's extraordinary. What would you like to do next?"
