But, apparently, gained a major news app, as Twitter changes its category in the iOS App Store from "social" to "news."
It's an interesting move (and a demonstration of why only allowing a single category is unlikely to work well with complex Real World stuff). Twitter's growth has been flat, and what most people talk about Twitter being useful for is the instant-live transmission of news (in little 140-byte chunks). By emphasizing that, making Twitter an information channel vs a chatting channel, it could successfully give them a boost.
Twitter gets anti-‘Social’ in the App Store, bills itself as ‘News’ – CNET

guffaw. Good thing I don't use it.
I’m hoping Twitter the company goes belly-up sooner rather than later; the current management are clueless, don’t understand their own product or their users, and Twitter is circling the drain as a result.
But whatever happens to the company, the site itself is unlikely to go dark. The likelyhood is that it will be sold to someone, perhaps Google, who understands its value and knows what to do with it.
I use Twitter pretty regularly. It's a fine microblogging tool, asynchronous chat tool, RSS feed, and, yes, news ticker.
