A Business Man You Can Trust To Lead America!

"Atlantic City fueled a lot of growth for me. The money I took out of there was incredible."

It's great that Donald Trump profited so well out of Atlantic City. A shame his investment partners, loan-holders, contractors, and staff — not to mention the city — can't say the same.

How Donald Trump Bankrupted His Atlantic City Casinos, but Still Earned Millions
Mr. Trump boasts of his success at the Jersey Shore resort, but regulatory reviews, court records and security filings indicate otherwise. And others paid the price.

  1. I'm surprised that Trump's history in the gambling business hasn't been a bigger factor in the election. I would think a good way to attack his suitability for office would be to suggest that the business model of a casino owner doesn't translate well to government.

  2. +David Newman The business model of any sort of business owner doesn't translate well to government, because government is not a for-profit operation, is answerable to a wide variety of stakeholders outside the executive's control, and is focused on service provision and continuity rather than earning statements and gross margin.

As to the gambling business being immoral or disreputable, unfortunately the those religious conservatives backing him are already well aware of his involvement in the industry, but back him because he's

    a. Not That Woman
    b. a staunch opponent of Islam
    c. promising to appoint SCOTUS justices to overturn Roe and Obergefell, and anything is worth it to them for that.

As far as I can tell.

  3. Stan- that is how a certain version of capitalism works. If you think that capitalism is about profiting from your own failures by stiffing your creditors, suppliers and employees, you may be part of the problem. He basically uses his wealth to take, and drag things out long enough that the little people end up bankrupt first.

And lets face it, it wasn’t as if this was a one off

This man consistently drives businesses into the ground, walking away with millions while the people who supplied him suffer. When he says he is a winner, this is what he means – he took the money, to hell with the final result.

He did the same with Trump Air.

If a sportsman said ‘I’m a winner – yeah the other side won, but I got paid’, would you class that as winning, or even sport?

Capitalism is taking an item, adding value and selling it to make a profit. The person who buys the product pays the profit because it is worth their while doing that.

If your version is acting like ‘The Producers’ then you may want to avoid getting to close to any walls when the revolution comes…

And then the this thin skinned vulgarian says he can run a country because he is a successful businessman. Head of State cant exactly take a profit then sell the country off to the highest bidder.

  4. +Stan Pedzick Actually, capitalism is supposed to work through the investment of capital to expand good and services, making a tidy profit for all.

Trump's activities in Atlantic City are a failure of capitalism for all but Donald Trump.

  5. government is not a for-profit operation

Could you send that on a postcard to The Rt Hon David Cameron, 10 Downing Street, London, United Kingdom. SW1A 2AA. I’m not sure that was ever explained to him.

  6. +Dave Hill Dave, all that you say is true, yet I think some businesses try to give the customer something of real value, while my impression of modern casinos is that they intentionally provide only the illusion of value. I am not morally opposed to gambling per se, but the flashy, trashy nature of the American casinos I have seen, the tricks they reportedly use to bolster their business, and their apparent connection to the mob all seem to me to be hallmarks of morally questionable behavior inconsistent with the purported values of the GOP and with middle-class American values of honesty, hard work, and fairness. I may have missed it, because I'm not following election coverage assiduously this year (trying to avoid things that piss me off too much), but I'm surprised that neither his GOP nor his Democratic opponents seem to have used this against Trump. And of course, the truth or justice of such an attack would be completely irrelevant for many political operatives, only its effectiveness would be relevant.

  7. +David Newman As a general rule, I think most of the American populace don't think the gambling industry has that much of a stigma any more; while they might not want a new race track next door, they don't necessarily mind it as an entertainment. At worst, it's tawdry. But that's not nearly enough to be an effective weapon against Trump (who oozes tawdry from his pores already), except among people who (a) see the gambling industry as victimizing people who can't afford gambling losses (probably not Trump voters anyway), or (b) see gambling as sinful, which is more than counter-balanced by the potential of Trump appointees to SCOTUS.

  8. Random fucking trolls…

I think that gambling in and of itself has lost a lot of its demonization, especially since Indian gaming is everywhere and places like Las Vegas have figured out the balance with selling it as just entertainment. But it does kind of blow my mind that Trump sells himself as a savvy businessman when his M.O. is driving his businesses to the brink and cashing out on everyone else's misery. Here's hoping the Democrats figure out a way to sell that counter-narrative.
