Because movie trailers are half (well, maybe a smaller fraction) of the reason to go see movies in the theater.
Thor: Ragnarok had some odd trailers packaged with it when we saw it on Friday.
Coco — This was actually more of a featurette. This looks like it’s going to be gorgeous, though I’m not so dedicated as to schedule a trip to the theater to see it, more “let’s stream it later”. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2380307/]
Wonder — The only one of the three films I know of this year with that word in the title but not involving a comic book. This one looks like the feel-good “kid overcomes disfiguring handicap with the help of his beautiful parents and people turning out to be good after all” film of this fall. Very inspirational (and some remarkable makeup work), but not my cuppa. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2543472/]
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle_ — I was all prepared to really dislike this film, but the trailer looks like a hoot-and-a-half. Definitely on my home watch list. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2283362/
Downsizing — A weird SF comedy about a process that shrinks people to a really tiny size and how that works really well for retirement, except when hilarity ensues or social consciousness gets raised. This could either be a hit or a horrifyingly bad flop. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1389072/]
Pacific Rim: Uprising — I have no idea what this movie is about except it has kaiju and giant mecha and they’re all fighting each other and tearing up cities and some of the cast seems very quirky. I very much enjoyed the first PR film; not sure about this one. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2557478/]
12 Strong — War is hell. Also inspirational. Also, apparently, full of horribly cliched dialog. A tale of a post-9/11 US special forces operation against the Taliban, starring (on the up side) Chris Hemsworth. Pass. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1413492/]
New Mutants — I had no idea that this horror movie was about the Marvel team of young mutants until the title came up at the end of the trailer. I still have no idea that it is, since nothing about it shouted “New Mutants” to me. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I await more word on the buzz around this one. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4682266/]
Black Panther — This looks pretty damned good. I’m in. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1825683/]
It appears that Coco is doing extremely well in Mexico, where's it's already been open for a couple weeks. Seems like a good sign since the film leans so heavily on Mexican culture.
I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I had The Disaster Artist, Wonder, and Black Panther. I'm down to see the first and the third.
Ive seen trailers or read about each of the following:
Coco is just another Disney ploy to include every culture in the world in its attempt to rule the planet.
Wonder is the 21st century version of Mask.
Jumanji will flop without Robin Williams
Downsizing is just a retelling of Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
Pacific Rim:Uprising seems like an ad for the new Xbox.
Black Panther is an attempt to make sure Black Lives Matter.
+Peter Bauck Good to hear. It looks entertaining and with, yes, some neat cultural stuff.
+Roy Hembree Hadn't heard of The Disaster Artist — doesn't sound like my cuppa, but interesting nonetheless.
+Dave Hill: I think my only real concern is the possibility that they've just remade The Book of Life with a Disney shine to it.
+Peter Bauck Well, doing a quick Google on the topic, I see people saying "Yes, Disney is, as we know, an all-consuming evil!" and others going, "Um, no, not so much."
I think part of it will boil down to whether the plots are dissimilar enough (bearing in mind basic Campbellian Hero's Journey similarities, and the use of Mexican cultural tropes).
My understanding, also doing some Googling, is Coco was first pitched in 2010, but the first official announcement was in 2012. The Book of Life started production at the end of 2012, and came in in 2014. The room for cross-contamination there doesn't seem broad.
I'm wary of Pacific Rim 2, but I'll give it a chance. The big thing that puzzles me about the trailer is the almost complete lack of Pacific Rim's iconic theme music.
I mean, if I just watch the trailer with the sound off and replace it with the original Pacific Rim theme, that already vastly improves my impression.
But trailer music is often completely different from what's used in the movie itself, so…shrug.
you know, i’ve been noticing that the choice of trailers playing before blockbusters (like thor and wonder woman) are getting odder and odder (at least from my experiences)
for example trailers i got before thor:
coco, 12 strong, downsizing, pacific rim uprising, jumanji, maze runner 3, justice league, black panther, star wars
btw when i went to see kong skull island i missed the trailers. if you saw that movie and know the trailers that played could you please post them? thanks
