Hard on restaurants

I’m afraid we tend to be hard on restaurants, finding places we like just in time for them to go under.

The latest, alas, we discovered Friday night: San Lorenzo Ristorante, over on Orchard and University, has closed its doors.

Margie and Katherine took me there for the first time for my birthday (it won Westword’s Best Italian something-or-another in 2008), and we visited there a couple of times since. The menu was interesting, the food was faboo, the service was friendly if sometimes overextended, and the prices reasonable for the quality.

It had been there a couple of years, but evidently couldn’t compete in the current downturn. Sorry to see it go, and we’ll be watching to see where Craig and Consuelo D’Alessandro show up again.

The concern had been, with a hostile administration, protections being taken from #trans folk. Now it seems the idea is to remove that entire identity. To make them unpersons.

I know that hoping for sensitivity, compassion, or leadership from #Trump is futile, but I could have gone all year without listening to his first official response to the DC plane crash, which, TL;DR "It's all Obama and Biden and Buttigieg's fault, not mine, because they hired terrible unqualified people under all those horrible #DEI rules, and got rid of all the great people I hired, so blame them, not me."

I know it's probably the least awful bit about #Trump now being President, but the fact he'll be President for the US Semiquincentennial in 2026 guarantees non-stop heartburn in my sensibilities as a patriot and historian. I'm aghast at the #Trump proto-ban on #trans folk in the #military. Last time he lied about the costs. Now it's a more fundamental attack:

1. That #transgender stuff? Not true.

2. So trans troops are lying, not being "honorable, truthful and disciplined."

3. So requesting others respect their identity is asking folk to lie, thus not showing "humility and selflessness."

So trans folk must be kicked out, probably dishonorably, because they are, QED, evil, corrupting liars.

#Trump issues EO stop federal support of any #gender #transitioning for those under age 19, and threatens federal litigation to prevent it, period. Any university, hospital, or medical group that gets any federal funding can and will be targeted here.

Why age 19 when age of consent / adulthood is 18? Because it sets a precedent for banning transition care all for adults, eventually.

Dark times for #trans folk and the friends and family who love them.

Having (a) exerted enough soft pressure to get a lot of companies to voluntarily drop their #DEI programs (or any semblance thereof), and (b) taken over the federal government and banned DEI there, the #GOP is now (c) threatening legal action against companies that have not complied with their demands to stop recognizing that historic and systemic #bias and #prejudice continue to interfere with their newly-sanctified worship of "merit."
