Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Did Jindal Bribe Louisiana’s Attorney General To Force Him To Join Frivolous Health Care Lawsuit? – “Nice Attorney General’s office you got here. Be a shame if something were to happen to it.” That’s not a bribe, that’s blackmail.
- ‘I never considered myself a maverick’ – McCain has walked back so many things, I expect any day now for him to deny having served in Vietnam.
- Is The U.S. Military Covering Up A 2007 Killing Of Reporters And Civilians In Baghdad? – Remember — it’s not the wrongdoing that gets you in trouble as much as the cover-up. You’d think the US military would have learned that lesson a dozen times over. Transparency may lead to embarrassment, but being caught out with lying is even more embarrassing, and ultimately does more damage.
- Common Sense – Good for them — not as a commentary on the relative harm that pot does vs alcohol or tobacco, but as a pragmatic response to the problems that harshly criminalizing pot has cause, it makes a great deal of sense.
- Mental health providers should prescribe exercise more often for depression, anxiety, research suggests – I wouldn’t want people to abuse this as “If they just got off their butts and took a walk, they wouldn’t be depressed,” but a short exercise can actually help with depression and anxiety, especially for run-of-the-mill, day-to-day problems that everyone has.
- Joseph and Mary in bed – obscene or illuminating? – This Just In – CNN.com Blogs – Actually, I think it could raise some interesting conversations about what life in the “Holy Family” was like. Mary and Joseph both tend to be so iconicized by Christianity (when anyone pays attention to Joseph at all) that they come across as far less human than Jesus. Certainly it’s provocative, but the reactions from the commenters to just dismiss it out of hand as obscene miss the point entirely — or, rather, make the point that they somehow want to divorce sexuality and human relationships from the divine, which is, to my mind, even more obscene.
- mental_floss Blog » 10 Famous Disembodied Voices – In a world were some voices are incredibly iconic, here are the faces behind those voices …
- NGC 602 and Beyond – And to me it looks like a giant mouth about to chomp down on some yummy stars.
- Blasting Dems for walking to work – When in doubt, blame the victim for being so “provocative.”
- Cassell’s crass confusion – It is, I suppose, just easier to oppose it because Fox & Friends told you so than to actually read up on your rhetorical points.
- BBC News – Jailed Dubai kissing couple lose appeal over conviction – Always useful getting some perspective on other countries vs. our own (while realizing there are some folk in this country who would be more than happy to see this be the status quo here).
