Unblogged Bits (Sun. 1-Aug-10 2000)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Scholars and Rogues » The nation’s 120,000 dams: Much more inspection, repair needed – Alas, it’s much easier (and sexy, and politician-resume-padding) to build than to maintain.
  2. Safe Snacking FAIL – Um … wow. Laughing, cringing, and rolling my eyes, all at the same time.
  3. Note to Christians: Please Don’t Say This – Whatever my personal beliefs on the subject, or even what I think are the beliefs of the person who’s in pain or grief, I’ve never felt this was an appropriate thing to say.
  4. Spirit Starts Charging Up To $45 For Carry-On Bags – Wow. I’m glad I’ve never had the opportunity or requirement to fly Spirit before now. And I’ll do my darnedest not to in the future.
  5. Man faces jail for videotaping gun-waving cop – “In other words, in any public interaction between a police officer and a member of the public in Maryland, it is private for one of them but not the other.” This is wrong. Especially when the one for whom it’s assumed private is, in fact, a public employee empowered to use deadly force.
  6. Microsoft Tech Can Deblur Images Automatically – Okay, this is not “we can blow up this image indefinitely to identify the license plate on that car” kind of TV thing … but a very cool application of inertial sensors on a camera being used to compensate for blur due to the camera moving during exposure. If you know how the camera moved, you should be able to somewhat correct for it. Spiffy.
  7. Cutest Thing Ever – Cute! Even with the typo!
  8. A sudden change of heart on the American auto industry – Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia!
