Unblogged Bits (Sun. 29-Aug-10 0202)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Movements are about something real: Steve Benen
  2. Eco urinal concept saves time and the environment – That’s actually rather clever. Plus, hopefully, soap.
  3. Tea Party Candidate Ken Buck Leading in CO-Senate – I’m not at all wowed by Bennet, for a variety of reasons. But I plan to send his campaign money, because Buck is just damned SCARY.
  4. The Long-Term Consequences of Hateful Politics – “Muslim Americans are, by and large, both socially and economically conservative. Sixty-one percent of them would ban abortion except to save the life of the mother; 84 percent support school choice. Muslims overwhelmingly support traditional marriage. More than a quarter — over twice the national average — are self-employed small-business owners, and most support reducing taxes and the abolition of the estate tax. By all rights they should be Republicans — and not long ago they were.” Granted, their numbers aren’t huge, and there may be a sense that there’s more to gain short-term by ginning up xenophobia by the Right … but, long-term, it’s a losing strategy for conservatives. And, I think, for the country (as if that were of concern).
  5. Faith-Based Groups Protest Aid Restriction in Bill – NYTimes.com – It’s remarkable that some religious organizations have conniptions that some abstract fraction of taxpayer money might somehow end up being spent on abortion, but are perfectly happy to have MY taxpayer money spent on religious discrimination in employment. How does that work again?
