Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Christine O’Donnell’s Mark Kirk problem – To be fair, I suspect that a lot of this is lying to herself as much as it is to others.
- yo gummint so big….. – On the myth of why we need to worry about what the Founders would think about the role of government in today’s US: “It’s not 1800 anymore. We need more from the feds than what they brought to the table in 1800.” With explanations of some of the cogent differences.
- Which Americans Are Republicans Pledging To? – Looking at the illustrations in their own document, it’s pretty clear: “America’s citizens, the hard-working, patriotic folks who matter and to whom the party is making pledges, are White.”
- Beneficiaries of the Bush Tax Cuts – A nice breakdown on who saved what in the Bush temporary tax cuts, and who will save what if they are extended.
- What McConnell considers ‘extreme’ – McConnell is a hack and an idjit. And, of course, he stands to be the Senate Majority Leader if the GOP take that chamber over.
- Chart of the Day – “Anyone taking the GOP seriously on budget issues just isn’t paying attention” — which, unfortunately, describes way too many people responding to polls.
- Picking and choosing when Wall Street counts as a metric – Simple: The GOP touts the Dow as reflecting them when it’s up, and the Dems when it’s down. That’s perfectly consistent. Also, stupid.
- House GOP prepares anti-climate crusade – What we have to look forward to if the GOP win the House. I don’t care how much the Obama Administration has disappointed, letting this kind of crap happen by not participating in this election would be a Really Bad Thing.
- Farah: Speaking to GOProud Like Addressing the KKK – Yeah, and here’s an even better quote: “However, I would suggest the ungodly, sin-glorifying homosexual agenda represents a far greater and far more imminent danger to the future of the United States than does the Klan’s racist, ungodly and sin-glorifying agenda.” When GOProud starts lynching heterosexuals, Joe, then we can talk. Until then, shut your yap.
- DeMint To Trigger The Senate’s Doomsday Device – Governance and Leadership are not obstruction, or suppression of debate. Except in the Senate. If the GOP (or at least Sen. DeMint) doesn’t like things, they can simply shut government down. Classy! Helpful! Asinine! And perfectly within the rules (rules written with the understanding that Senators were colleagues and would work with one another with a certain measure of collegiality, not ideological Twilight Warriors who stand at the brink of National Armageddon if they don’t Win At All Costs). Disgusting.
- the 5000th Lockheed Lightning produced, 1944 – I always thought the P-38 was an incredibly cool plane.
- Conservative Jones’ latest case – This Modern World – Salon.com
- How Ignorant About Religion Are Religious Americans? – Short answer? Very. Reasons? Too many ostensibly religious people are just along for the ride. They don’t think about their religion. They stopped learning about it in elementary school. They know the big Bible passages, but the rest is all on form, not theological function, let alone history, let alone knowledge of religions other than their own. That’s not necessarily a fault of religion (you get similar appalling results on non-religious topics in this country), but on the individuals involved, on our acceptance of ignorance as a culture, and on the folks who try to “teach” through sound bite and demagoguery.
- NY GOP Wants Russell Off the Ticket : Dispatches from the Culture Wars – Sorry, no takebacks …
- Microsoft may be turning a new page in dropping Live Spaces – That’s a small but stunning change.
- Google Blacklist – Words That Google Instant Doesn’t Like – The full list is kind of interesting. I don’t see this as particularly sinister, but it does show the tension between “information should be avaiable to everyone” and “Aunt Sadie just called to complain about the bad words in her Google.” (NSFW)
- How They Are Struggling with Suicides in China (3 pics) » Izismile – Pictures, videos, games and more – Yes, that’s some safety culture there …
- Voter Anger Palpable At Intentionally Anger-Stoking Rally | The Onion – “It’s almost as if thousands of people came to this rally with the intention of being angered, and then were.”
