I imagine if I were part of a community subject to random spying and accusations of disloyalty by the authorities … I'd be progressively less and less cooperative with the authorities. Wouldn't you?
I do understand the interest in watching for dangerous extremism in various elements of society. But the NYPD — and the FBI, and most law enforcement — have handled this in in a remarkably ham-handed and destructive fashion, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of secretive, uncommunicative Muslims who don't report on possible problems. The only question in my mind is whether that was intentional or not. #ddtb
