Part of what's amusing/maddening about the debate is that it's couched (by government critics) as being "unfair" — it's "unfair" that federal workers earn more, or get better benefits, or whatever.
Of course, I strongly suspect most of those same people would vilify any attempt to discuss "fairness" in private industry wages. #ddtb

CBO Offers Its Two Cents on Federal Pay
Federal workers overall get just 2 percent higher wages than private-sector employees holding similar jobs, but they receive 16 percent more in total compensation because of generous benefits.
