Katherine's erstwhile neighbor friends, Kendall and Tyler, are visiting from North Carolina, so I took them all out to see the new Madagascar flick, which opened today.
A fun movie, with a bit more depth than one might expect, until you think of the themes (self-actualization, family) tackled in the first two installments. Though there's a theme here, too (figuring out and attaining your dreams), it's pretty light fair, as the series becomes increasingly derivative ("Hey, this bit worked well in the first movie, so let's do it a bit more in the second, and that was successful, so let's crank it to 11 in the third") but still able to amuse.
We saw it in 2D — given some of the big numbers, I can imagine the 3D version would have some real visual delights, but I didn't feel like I'd missed anything critical.
The kids enjoyed it, I enjoyed it, and my only regrets were staying through the credits to see if there were any bits there (there aren't, so don't bother). Worth seeing, though it can probably wait for disc or download.
