Serving you ads … because you WANT them!

That seems to be the selling point for the new ads that Microsoft will be adding to Skype calls. Quoth a spokescritter:

"While on a 1:1 audio call, users will see content that could spark additional topics of conversation that are relevant to Skype users and highlight unique and local brand experiences. So, you should think of Conversation Ads as a way for Skype to generate fun interactivity between your circle of friends and family and the brands you care about. Ultimately, we believe this will help make Skype a more engaging and useful place to have your conversations each and every day."

Yes, because when I'm on the phone with people, I usually keep the TV running so I can tell them about the ads I'm watching.

I don't object to the ads per se (esp. since I'm not a Skype user), just that they're acting like they're doing us some big social favor by including them.

Though, who knows — maybe they can serve as topic feeders on the next Stupid Evil Podcast!

  1. …content that could spark additional topics of conversation…

Such as “Aw, cripes. Another stinking ad!” “Yeah, I hate those.”

  2. My younger son who works out of state and out of the country, keeps in touch with his wife and grown children via Skype. I don’t think he’s going to be happy about this, nor do I think that they ever run out of conversational topics since they only see each other in person every few months!
