Though it’s been years (cough) since I did this, I used to love diagramming sentences. It’s like structured programming for English, and I found it gave me a much better appreciation of how sentence structure and parts of grammar work.
It’s not, though, for everyone (any more than any teaching tool is), and requires both an analytical and visual bent of mind. (h/t +Steven S)

Last time I diagrammed a sentence was 20 years ago. It is no longer being taught at the moment.
