Oppressed and oppressors

It is a sad fact that those who have once been oppressed — bitterly, justly, profoundly oppressed — do not seem to be immune to the human tendency to make things about "Us vs Them" and to make sure that "Us" don't have to treat "Them" as equals.

Thus the irony of the Southern Baptist Convention — a group with a long history of racism and support of the Southern slave and Jim Crow culture — has just elected its first black president — and at the same time passed a resolution denying that gays could legitimately be seeking protection of their "civil rights".

Rev. Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, was one of the crafters of that resolution.

'McKissic, who is black, said it was “an unfair comparison” for gays to equate same-sex marriage with civil rights because there is not incontrovertible scientific evidence that homosexuality is an innate characteristic, like skin color. “They’re equating their sin with my skin,” he said.'

Obviously Rev. McKissic doesn't think _religion_ is a civil right, either, since it is not "an innate characteristic" and most faithful consider the beliefs and activities of other denominations or faiths to be sinful.

McKissic went on: "When homosexuals have spent over 200 years in slavery, when homosexuals have been legally defined as three-fifths human, when homosexuals have been denied the right to vote and own property because they are homosexuals, then we can begin a discussion of parallels [between the civil rights and gay rights movements]."

I guess thousands of years of being legally killed, imprisoned, reviled, fired from jobs, denied the opportunity to live openly with their loved ones, and in fact of being open about themselves, doesn't count.

Rev. McKissic ought to check out that beam in his eye — it's got to be really irritating.
