Partisan positions and being forced to explain them

When you do get people to think through and explain policy points, they tend to realize how little they understand and, in turn, moderate their views.  

Which is why, of course, we must never ask for explanations  from others our ourselves, but instead hoist high the flag, chant the mantra, and make sure our ideological tribe remains pure and unquestioning!
