So, my birthday was today. Got an interesting flurry of birthday wishes from folks on Facebook (where I almost never spend time, but many thanks, peeps), and one from Google Plus. Plus cards and emails and phone calls and the like.
Even though I'm coming up on three-quarters of my alloted "three-score years and ten," I'm not feeling particularly old, which is a good thing, I guess. But this past year marked an important transition for me.
I became That Guy.
You know. That Guy. With the Pills. The one who has an assortment of pills to take in the morning. And in the evening. And, occasionally, at lunch.
That Guy.
The one the wife joking threatens to buy cute pill boxes for, or a seven-day daily pill container.
In my case it's for hypertension (high blood pressure) and cholesterol, and neither is (yet) major medical (or pharmaceutical) events. But it's quickly gone from a novelty (taking a daily pill due to prescription, not because I need something for my hayfever) to a vague annoyance. Especially since it's difficult to arrange properly on the medicine cabinet shelf to deal with both morning and evening meds.
Both are conditions that, with proper diet and exercise and etc. I can probably resolve. And I'm not maudlin, mind you. I had a nice (if early-starting) birthday, received some fun gifts, and it culminated in great dinner at Frasca in Boulder with Margie & Kay, and Stan & Mary. I have a lovely life. I have my health (for the most part). And I made it through another year.
Still … an odd milestone to come to mind.

Happy Birthday! Have to tell you, the weekly pill container is a good thing. At least I keep telling myself that.
Happy Birthday! Enjoy your day.
I have a pill container that is AM and PM. I still forget. Ah well….you’re still a youngster. Don’t worry about it.
I've been using one of those for years, ever since some confusion led to skipping doses and taking multiple doses with unpleasant results. Now I load it up once a week and I can tell at a glance if I did or didn't.
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday!
+George Wiman – I have no doubt I will eventually get one of these (probably one of the matrixed a.m./Noon/p.m. versions), because that's the kind of organized guy I am. And as I've seen first-hand how taking double doses of the wrong kind of meds can play havok with someone, I don't to take any chances.
But not … yet. 🙂
+Sandy L. and +Lorne Lehrer — thanks!
Well, urm. Sorry I missed noting your b-day on the day itself. Glad it sounds like it was an enjoyable one!
It was indeed. And no worries — I'm not good at remembering birthdays myself, even with social networks now going to such troubles to notify us about it.
That Google+ one was from me. I have to admit that I cheated. While Facebook will send you a notice at the start of the week for the birthdays of your friends, apparently Google will put it right on their homepage. My browser's start page is Google and when I fired it up it on the day of your birth the search page had your pic and name in the upper right corner with a little text saying it was your Birthday. I clicked it and it let me post to your stream. Google+ is really starting to impress the hell out of me.
So, when you say "today" was your birthday on the 5th or 6th? Either way, sorry I missed any sort of notification of it on G+ and Happy Birthday! 🙂
Belated birthday wishes for a better year than last.
I forgot to send you AND my friend Stephanie birthday greetings, and yes, your birthdays are on the same day–not sure about year, as I have no idea what her age is.
There were a few years in Santa Cruz, when I had to have am and pm boxes. Anyone expecting me to take anything 3 times a day is skirting it, and 4x is right out. Ain’t happening consistently. I don’t have that kind of a day…
