DC Comics Does It Again

Yet another acclaimed creative team walks away from the company because of repeated last-minute interference by editorial.

I've not been a huge Batwoman fan — a regular reader, but I found the storylines a bit on the weird side (nothing to do with the relationships, mind you, but pretty much everything else) and too artsy for their own good.

That said, it's been a critically acclaimed series that has garnered DC a lot of plaudits and a very loyal following. Which, of course, they've just kicked to the curb.

FWIW, there are a number of folks suggesting the marriage ban has nothing to do with the genders of the characters as much as DC editorial's general disdain/dislike of married characters.  Which may well be true, though that doesn't make it all that much better.  DC's systematic dismantling, dismembering, and/or retconning away of any marriages among their protagonists has been as notorious as it's been thorough — and offputting.

My prediction is that, after Williams and Blackman leave, the title will limp on for several months more before folding.  Whether the title character will survive is an open guess.  Batwoman has been a step or two outside the normal DC Universe, with limited cross-overs and a very different tone, which has been both useful for building a nicely crafted comic, and simultaneously making it a title that can be easily screwed up or chopped.

Williams and Blackman Quit Batwoman Due to Ban on Kate and Maggie Marriage
One of the most consistent creative teams since the start of the new 52, writers Haden Blackman and J.H. Williams III have quit the Batwoman series. And there is no dancing around why based on a post…
