Photon Torpedoes! Full Spread!

"We have a compliment of thirty-eight photo torpedoes, Captain."
"And no way to replace them after they're gone."

I guess there were some extra boxes of them stashed down in the hold ….

And this is why a continuity bible for your show is important. During the course of the show, Voyager managed to fire 123 of it's limited supply of only 38 photon torpedoes that they had no way of resupplying.

  1. Apparently in one of the DVD extras Rick Sternbach explains that they replicate the casings and collecting or trading for the required elements from planets and space stations.  Which you know, would be the logical thing to do if you're expecting a 70+ year journey.  If Voyager hadn't been willing to trade and manufacture things they wouldn't have gotten very far.

  2. +Craig Geddes That's certainly a logical thing — but something I don't recall ever hearing about on the show, except for the Plot of the Week kind of items.  I'd expect at the same time to start seeing more Quadrant tech, decor, etc. showing up in the ship, too.

One of my favorite Voyager eps was the one where we flash forward X years, and the ship (and adopted Borg tech, as I recall) look like they're really been on their own in a war. I was very disappointed when all that got retconned at the end of the ep.

  3. Sorry Dave, my message came off as a little confrontational there.  I'd just come out of an argument on another website!  Very sorry.

You're right, there should have been more reference to adopting delta quadrant technology and cultural ideas.  Other than some aspects of the Delta Flyer, their Borg defensive upgrades and the occasional engine modification you don't get much feel of a ship that is trading widely with other peoples.  Even though a lot of the cultures they encounter are technologically inferior you'd still expect to see their curious, scientifically minded crew to adopt more of the ideas they see.

At the same time though I suppose they're only out there for 7 years and are on the go pretty constantly.  Plus, though the crew is pretty large, their areas of specialty are very diverse so there's going to be less in the way of scientific dialogue to help them integrate new ideas into their existing technology.  I imagine when they got home their logs probably promoted quite the range of technological innovation back at Star Fleets research facilities.

That's one of my favourite Voyager stories, "Year of Hell" parts 1 and 2.

  4. +Craig Geddes — yes, that was the title — thanks!

No worries on the tone. I didn't take it as overly aggressive.

I recognize the limitations of both storytelling time and the Trek franchise and popular entertainment (esp. of the period). There were aspects of "Voyager" I enjoyed, but I always felt that they never quite made the long march home quite as grinding or desperate as it ought to have been or as was hinted at early days in the series. Things like supply shortages, discipline issues, stress , frictions in the crew between Star Fleet and Maquis, all sorts of elements like that could have given it a "what will you do when your back is against the wall" feel like "The Walking Dead" or BSG, rather than the standard planet / monster / Borg threat of the week.

Ah, well. I'll wait for the reboot one of these years. 🙂
