2,200 Degrees Yet Cool Enough to Handle
A very cool (pardon the temperature pun) demonstration of LI-900 in action. This is the stuff that the Space Shuttle tiles are made from.
They are composed of 99.9% silica glass and are 94% air by volume. That means that they are incredibly bad heat conductors, making those edges safe to handle with bare hands.
They can also be submerged immediately into cold water and suffer no damage. Pretty neat, huh?
We thought so, and since we love all things #science and #space here at www.solarvps.com – we figured it was definitely worth a share.
Hope you all are having an excellent #monday !

I had no idea they used Cosmic Cubes.
+Scott Randel I came this close to commenting about that, too.
I think +Rich LaDuca had a neighbor who worked on these.
A Dr. Coston in fact!
I got to handle a shuttle tile years ago in junior high science class. They feel like really hard styrofoam in your hand, and they clink when you tap them like porcelain.
