I periodically try out other blogging clients than my long-time favorite, SharpMT, just to make sure I’m not missing out on something keen. This week it’s ecto, which has been a long-time favorite for MacOS types, and now is available for Windows (and is being used by Ginny).
So far so good. Haven’t run across anything about it that I couldn’t live without, and don’t have yet a good feel as to whether it adds substantially enough to my life to be worth the $18 (SharpMT being free — though I’ve hit Randy’s donate button at least once).
One nice feature it does have is a nice HTML preview page that I can point at with my online CSS file, thus actually seeing what is going to post much more closely.
We’ll see how it goes.
I’m feeling better about ecto. I figured out what was confusing me on the save/draft/edit score. I’m still not crazy about how you can have more than one instance of a post open, but it should be avoidable. And I also like the ability to see posts with my own stylesheet.
Now, on your side, how cool is the iTunes and Amazon stuff really? Meh? or should I be crying?
There’s a pretty straightforward iTunes link in SharpMT, but I almost never user it (since I rarely have music playing). There’s no automated Amazon thing; I have some tags set up (similar to the HTML bits that ecto lets you insert) to handle Amazon links and images (just change the ASIN). That tag/HTML snippet functionality is one of the things that’s set SharpMT apart from a number of other blog clients, and ecto’s having it is a serious plus in my eyes.
The stylesheet thing is kind of cool; even with “convert line breaks” it still has a slightly different appearance than the actual displayed page, but it’s a lot closer.
Not 100% “sold” yet, but I’m pretty happy with an afternoon’s use of ecto.
I guess I thought you were on a Mac – if not, then you’re seening the same features I see. But I will be adding a snippet for Amazon tags, since I tend to use them a lot.
Nope — a Windows boy myself. Used to have a Mac (loved my old SE/30), but …
