Tempting fate

While Margie was pushing a new scrapper through her paces yesterday afternoon (possibly as a partner for Sister Chinook), I was busy letting Velvet stretch her legs.
Ended up in a pick-up team, which gets a definite C+ — nobody on the team was stupid, but nobody was very disciplined (no “Ready,” no planning/coord). The roster kept changing, too — I was on for about 4 hours with them, I think, and only two others were constants; the rest came and went. The Team Leader didn’t have any hesitation about simply inviting more folks in, and we were running at 8 members (with all the villain pop implications of that) most of the time.
Funniest moment was our second door mish, which turned out to be Lost in Steel Canyon. First hallway, blue-white. Piece of cake, and someone complained as to whether we could do a real mission next time, in a difficult zone, for decent XP.
Shortly after that, we had our hats handed to us. Pull too many high-level orange-red Lost, and the team is goin’ down, clown.
I’m rather proud that Velvet managed, despite a mediocre Healer, to avoid dying, despite, oh, three or four near-total-party-kills in that particular “low-XP” mission. I kept a good eye on my HP, as well as that of others, and didn’t hesitate to pound F6 and advance to the rear.
Discovered the fun of range-taunting. Get a controller that has an area slow/knockdown sort of power. He sets that up. Velvet stands at the edge and just taunts, drawing all fire from those who are in it or are still on the far side. This lets the blasters (of which we had several) to their thing without taking big hits from the nasty ranged weapons.
It works great — if you have a decent healer.
Eventually we cleared that mish, and moved back to IP, a Sky Raiders mish. Started out yellow-white, progressed to yellow-orange (and another NTPK, as we all managed to attack a big cluster of them in an open office atrium from multiple sides — which meant they had us surrounded, not the other way around), and eventually ran into a room that was full of red-purples for me — and I was the highest in the group.
It was getting to be Kitten dinner time by then, a couple of others had left, and I didn’t see how we were getting any further. So I departed as well.
Managed, mostly through that “low” Steel mission, to rack up about 6 pips for Velvet’s march to 23.
I considered, afterwards, if I should have called on some friends pr SG companions (incl. higher level ones) to lend a hand. Honestly, though, I didn’t feel good enough about the team to put other folks in that kind of danger. But something to consider next time.

  1. Saturday.
Areally bad day. 6k debt for Ciunas and 4k debt for Zazi. I find it funny that now most people will not do missions unless they have 8 people.
    Wierd.
But I was able to get Roben up to 18 and picked up Invincible.
    Sunday.
Was able to erase Ciunas’ debt with three good missions, with a team that was at times C to B+. The only real mishap occurred when one of the controllers (mind) did something to the back mob (Frosty, first floor hallway after the first roundabout with the office at the corner). She claimed that it didn’t cause aggor, but when the guys are getting attacked by one of their own,and then see a tank just 20′ away…where are they going to go. So almost a TPK, The controller and the two blasters got out (the Tank, the two healers, and the 2 scrappers did not). Got to see a great demonstration of TP foe. Works great for clearing out the minions.
I am not amused at Ciunas being referred to as taxi-bot because she has recall friend. Also, on saturday, the guy who formed up the party didn’t want ot lead, and kept passing the ledership star to every other member of the party. Most annoying.
Also on Saturday, Respec’d Zazi and got rid of Combat Kick, and moved Swift to that spot (thus moving up Health, and Stamina one level (22nd and 24th levels)). With Stealth and swift, she moves at the normal speed. W00t! With Sprint and swift on and Stealth off, she goes zoom!

  2. Sunday was a bad day for me. Joined a group that turned out to have a friend of mine on it! Things went well at first (completed two of my missions). But after my friend left, things went wrong. On a Banished pantheon mission, about two levels above most of us, we got slaughtered (Avocet HATES the Banished pantheon!). Most of the group quit, leaving me leading two others. So, the Blaster, Controller and Defender went back in to do it right. Even taking our time, doing everything by the numbers, we were taken down several more times. We never finished the mission, and Avocet has 12,000 debt remaining.
And he has a contact who insists that something be done about the Pantheon. Ugh.

  3. Oh…forgot a bit of funny.
With the good teaming from sunday. People came and went over the three missions. One person (Ms. Glory) that was picked up at the end of the Tsoo mission (Mr. Po) dropped on the at the end of the first floor of frosty because it “Was going to slow”. We were still getting good ex and nobody was dieing (after the Almost-TPK), we just were taking it slow and by the numbers, which was not what they wanted. Nobody died the rest of the mission. Which prompted me to say “well, I guess for some people, getting debt is what this game is all about”.

  4. Sometimes it seems that way.
I am (not surprisingly) usually a cautious player. Yes, if things are going smoothly I can get cocky (and, almost inevitably, into trouble — usually with Velvet, appropriately enough), but I am usually happiest taking things by the numbers. Brief discussion of tactics, softening up, power up, “Ready” in unison, and go.
Which, for some folks, seems to be like trying to play CoH in Sanskrit.
