While some folks have created third-party skinning solutions for Gmail, Google is finally making it official and offering up many very purty skins for their free (and faboo) email product. (I am fond of the greenscreen terminal one, just to look at — it makes me feel a brief moment of nostalgia.)

I haven’t seen the “Themes” entry show up in my Gmail controls, but Google always rolls these things out slowly.

While this is trivial in many ways, I think it may very well help speed adoption of Gmail by folks who were put off by its Google-typical spartan interface. It doesn’t add any functionality — but it looks nice, and maybe that’s a function right there.

Hmmmm … are themes for other Google products, like Reader, on their way soon?
