Unblogged Bits (Tue. 7-Sep-10 1731)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. NM Corrections Secretary Refusing To Penalize Contract-Breaching Private Prison Company He Used To Work For – But remember: deregulated privatized public services are good! (For their stockholders!)
  2. Montana Tea Party Leader Fired For Advocating Violence Against Gays — But Is Backed By State GOP Candidate – Wow. They seriously don’t get it. There’s having differences of opinions and then there’s joking about the murder of a gay college student. One can be tolerated; the other cannot. (And, of course, there’s a difference between social opprobrium and government censorship; Ravndal (and his FB pal) has every legal right to say what was said, and people have every right to find it repugnant and call for his firing.
  3. Short sleepers at higher risk of diabetes and heart disease – Ruh-roh …
  4. People For the American Way: Palin-Beck 2012: Vote on the Best Campaign Slogan! – It’s tough to beat the first one, but most of these have their own measure of pizazz. Not that I really want to see this ticket, on the off chance that the Yahoos might actually win …
  5. ACLU Challenges Laptop Searches and Seizures at the Border – “We are not saying that the government can never search or seize electronic devices at the border, but only that border agents should have some suspicion that the search will turn up evidence of wrongdoing before looking through all the private information that people have stored in their devices.” Damn straight. If the government isn’t allowed to simply enter our houses at their whim and search our computers there, I see no reason why crossing the border should be any different.
  6. The Intellectual Amnesia Of The GOP – “Republicans talk budgetary policy …. They need to think about economic policy. The measure of success is not shrinking the deficit – that’s just a means to an end – but raising incomes.” But, then, “cheap-labor conservatives” aren’t interested in raising the income of most people — just their own.
  7. GOP Control Of Federal Trial Courts Has Increased Since Obama Took Office – See! It’s not a bug! It’s a feature! (But woe betide the Dems if they ever offer up the same obstructionism!)
  8. Gays excluded from clinical trials : Covering Health
  9. Relax, it’s Denver: City rated among least-stressful – The Denver Post – Wow. Now I don’t dare move.
  10. Are Your Pants Lying to You? An Investigation – Esquire – As someone currently, um, struggling with size 36, this is … disheartening.
  11. Obama eyes infrastructure investment to boost the economy – Infrastructure spending is not only pouring money directly into a faltering economy, it’s an investment (or, better yet, maintenance of an investment) in our future. This sort of thing should be a no-brainer — which is why the no-brainers will filibuster it.
  12. Hate-filled pastor preaches to reporters (and a few adherents) – “With Keller we have a radical figure, who’s lashed out wildly at Americans, intending to build a controversial religious center two blocks from Ground Zero. We don’t know where his money will come from, or what kind of zealotry will spread from the building. If there’s supposed to be a ‘zone of solemnity’ around Ground Zero, shouldn’t the denunciations of Keller be more common? Or is it more likely that a radical evangelical Christian is deemed far less controversial than a moderate Muslim committed to combating extremism?” I think we know what the answer is.
  13. The bogus narrative that will only get more ubiquitous – Obama’s problem is that, in too many areas, he HAS been a centrist, throwing over the “f’ing retards” on the liberal wing in an attempt to garner support from the few moderate Republicans out there. Meanwhile, “Lindsey Graham wants Obama to ‘come back to the middle’? Here’s a silly question for Graham: when might your party ‘come back to the middle’? When was the last time congressional Republicans offered a centrist compromise on literally any policy dispute? When was the last time Graham’s Senate caucus allowed the Senate to vote up or down on meaningful legislation without a filibuster, a hold, or both? When was the last time the GOP mainstream responded to White House outreach with a single idea where the parties could work together?”
