Unblogged Bits (Mon. 26-Sep-11 1131)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Molly Ivins June 10 1997 on Creators.com – Ran across this today in another context, and thought it a worthwhile look back on … well, exactly the same thoughts about the death penalty 14 years ago from Molly as we’re (still) hearing today.
  2. Alabama Town Orders Small Time Offenders To Attend Church — Or It Will Throw Them In Jail – Crikey. Though I have to wonder what would happen if one of the prisoners were to say, “Okay — where’s your local Wicca coven?” …
  3. Reasons why people who work with computers seem to have a lot of spare time … – Heh.
  4. Living people to appear on US stamps – The Denver Post – Ah. Profit (or revenue, at least) above principle. Perhaps they can sell commercial advertising space on stamps, or political ads.
  5. From the desert to the web: bringing the Dead Sea Scrolls online: A Googler
  6. Human Rights Logo Takes Flight – I think it’s a very nice logo indeed — but the motto that goes along with it is problematic, and the high concept gibberish that is used to explain it is godawful.
  7. Justice, After Troy Davis – NYTimes.com – I see the point here — that we should be working to improve the whole justice system, not just focusing on our fatally (in more ways than one) flawed capital punishment process. And I agree in principle, but disagree in practice. The killing needs to stop.
  8. Cellphones spread into “tween” demographic – The Denver Post – We’ve resisted getting Kay a cell phone, for a variety of reasons, but I suspect that time is coming sooner rather than later.
