The GOP candidates and Gay Marriage

Dear Mr. Gingrich: I realize your own sense of what marriage consists of may be different than most, and it's nice that you attribute a bit more to gay relationships than just depraved lust, but dismissing married gay couples as just "friends" is demeaning and arrogant … just what we've come to expect from you.

Also, neither the US government or state governments institute "sacraments." Baptism is not done at the post office, Last Rites are not overseen by Medicare administrators, Confirmation is not a class in middle school. So why do you think that the battle over gay marriage is about whether "institute the sacrament of marriage"? That's a matter for churches, not the legislature.

Dear Mr. Romney: If someone were to say that marriage is a Christian sacrament (see Mr. Gingrich, above), and therefore Mormon marriages weren't really marriage, and why do those crazy Mormons need to appropriate that word for their "long-term committed relationships with one another", would you consider that proper?

Dear Mr. Santorum: Yes, you can pass a Constitutional Amendment to define something as anything you want, legally. We could have a Constitutional Amendment that defines White as the only legally recognized humans, Christianity as the only legally recognized religion, and Men as the only legally recognized voters. Would that make it right?

  1. I’m betting Candace wants to kick her dad, but she’s already working on the Obama campaign.

While Santorum is welcome to offer any number of proposals for Amendments to the Consititution, whether they’d pass is another issue.

I notice no GOP fuss over Newt’s Catholicism, which many fundies do not consider “Christian” either.

    1. @Marina – Protestant, esp. Evangelical Protestant, opposition to Catholicism as being non-Christian seems to have died way back. Being Catholic is okay-ish (the new target is Mormons). That reconciliation has been helped by the Catholic Church adopting many of the same strongly conservative stance on many social issues (though not all — they still tend toward an economic justice teaching).

In some ways it’s similar to the reconciliation of Protestant denominations in the 19th Century, where they found they could get more accomplished working together than apart — and, to that end, ended up filing away many of the dogmatic barriers that had kept Presbyterians and Lutherans and Congregationalists and Episcopalians apart (and, in early colonial days, had made them violent enemies).
