On the Ending of "The Desolation of Smaug"

Doyce gives a marvelous explanation of why the second installment of The Hobbit really needed to conclude with the big brouhaha that it did.  I agree wholeheartedly with the rationale, though not so much with the result (which, as he notes, "owes a bit more to the Temple of Doom than Tolkien").
