This article claims that, whether or not blogging is a fad, it’s having a distinct impact on the web … in particularly, Google.
First, Google likes links. Google uses links — and links to where links are coming from — as its primary criterion of how important a page is. Blogging is all about linking.
Secondly, Google likes freshness. It’s added how recently a page has been refreshed to its importance criteria, too. Blogging is about freshness.
That doesn’t mean that blogs show up often in Google. Most blogs aren’t linked to a lot (relatively speaking). But they serve as important voters in what pages show up in Google, by adding fresh links to target sites.
Neat stuff.
