George Lucas maintains that he’s not planning on ever doing Episodes VII-IX (the “After the Fall of the Empire” third trilogy). Sure, it’s been written about by various Lucas-authorized novelists, but here’s another fan’s attempt to set the scene for a long time after, in a galaxy far, far away. Good stuff. And if we wait another decade, Carrie Fischer might be just right for the role.

why would he tell us there is a third and not produce it?
I could really hate that man.
I’m not altogether certain of the origin of the “Three Trilogies.” I seem to recall that it popped up in the early, giddy years after Star Wars first premiered, and that it was a single, off-hand remark, based on his having background notes on the whole saga.
Of course, Lucas’ vision of the whole thing has changed radically over the years. Even his concept of this all being the Fall and Redemption of Anakin Skywalker is, I think, more in retrospect than some original Grand Scheme.
It was specifically mentioned in a Rolling Stone article, many years ago (probably about the time Jedi was being filmed). I recall reading it, and it was confirmed for me recently when an online article quoted that RS article.
