Well, I finally finished sifting through the thousand-odd Blogger entries I imported to MT a few months ago, cleaning up titles and giving them all categories. Whoosh!

That lets me get into my next project: revamping the search functionality for my blog.

I originally used Atomz search, but that has a limit of 500 pages. Then I upgraded to PicoSearch, but that pegs out at 1,500 pages.

I have 2,400-odd pages. I’ll give a big announcement when I hit 2,500.

(Atomz and PicoSearch are both very fine tools, and the limits I mention are for free levels of service, not their pay service. As well, it’s partly my fault for archiving my entries on single pages. So be it.)

On my Archive/Search page, I’ve long had an alternative search set up with MT-Search, a plug-in that can be found here. Hey presto, there’s a new version out, though the programmer has passed the whole kit-n-kaboodle over to the Trotts for (one hopes) inclusion in the next version of MT.

So I’ll be working to get the new MT-Search (which has no page limit, since it hits against the database) working ASAP, so that I can pull out the obsolete PicoSearch code. Hopefully the new version has some better output tags in it, since that’s been my biggest bitch about MT-Search. We’ll see.

UPDATE: MT Search is up an running. Coolness, I hope. And, after all, all the best bloggers do it …

  1. Oh. (And I didn’t implement this, as it turned out, since I forgot), but displaying the file name of the archive file as well as the link. Which, of course, it could do in 1.2 — not sure what I was thinking of.

I’m displaying the date and time now, and the default template that comes with it does, too.

Only thing that it doesn’t really do now is highlight where in the post the search text is (a la Google and most search engines). But I can live without that.

  2. You goober. 🙂 I just installed ver. 1.3b and I’m rocking out with all kinds of tags. And why would you want it to display the filename of the archive file since you can set that up as the hyperlink?

The highlighting of the text is a bigger fish than this (excellent but) teeny little program.

  3. I kind of like seeing the filename in searches. I guess in a single-site search, with archive filenames (esp. ones that are out of sequence, like mine are), it wouldn’t be terribly meaningful.

Yeah, the highlighting thing is “whatchu said.”

And now I need to go over and see what sorts of tags you’re rocking out with.
